"Yes Rose, that would be a Ravenclaw answer."
Wow, he was defending her. That was nice. Maybe they could serve detention together. "Of course I was being sarcastic. Facing the unknown is a given. It is the real world after all and not school." Marlene wasn't happy with the way the professor had responded to her, what with the whole stating that he was an auror and not a teacher. "An auror and not a teacher. Well that much is clear. Given how you held your bag close to yourself, being nervous,or is it afraid, about teaching a bunch of fifteen year olds." It was kind of a low shot, but it was true it seemed by the man's action earlier.
"Obviously. he is being kind." She rolled her eyes at what Rose had said. She was annoyed and would have to apologize later, if confronted about it. "And yes you are right Rose, we won't have prep time out there. I should know." And she did know and apparently so did everyone else, mostly it came from men trying to accost her when she was still learning to control her veela magic. This class was messed up. Maybe this professor would be gone before then end of term, but who knows. She was starting to dislike him.

Severus frowned looking at Rose. "I would rather you not be hurt because of me." He didn't want people to hate her because they were together. Because he wasn't willing to change his views, despite being scared out of his pants of the Dark Lord himself. Because no one would accept him but the Death Eaters. He was alone – and sure, people might say that he should be alright with just Rose and Lily, but he wanted more. He wanted to feel like he belonged somewhere – not just with two people. A whole group of people. He wanted a family. He wanted comrades in arms. He wanted something to belong to – something to put his intellect towards.
Severus looked lazily at Marlene and rolled his eyes. "Oh yes, because picking out a lipstick color is so hard. So dangerous. Oh no, what if you picked plum instead of sorbet? You'd be ruined! Surely an auror would have no idea the dangers of picking out the right eyeshadow either!" Yes, he was being a rude person. Mostly because he didn't like Gryffindors. But also, because they were being disrespectful to their professors. Severus had thoughts like that all the time about his professors, but at least he tended to respect them in general. In general. Not all the time.
"I'm pretty sure the world out there is worse than an abusive parent who beats you when your defenseless or worry about losing your family. You know, you might fear your family dying but there are plenty of people who are living that fear. Be grateful he didn't just use an unforgivable on you to show you your place, McKinnon. I wouldn't be surprised if as soon as you graduate you and your entire family are murdered with that kind of attitude. Maybe you should stop getting onto the professor and start actually listening. Might do you some good."

Post by David T. McKay on Oct 14, 2018 2:06:08 GMT
McKay was just about to make a remark in return when Severus Snape began speaking and McKay couldn't help but blink slightly. He knew he liked Slytherins. Probably because he was one. Wait no, his cover was Hufflepuff. He couldn't go around showing any sort of bias towards Slytherins or someone might suspect something was up. However, then Severus Snape went a little too far with the whole 'you probably will be murdered' thing.
"That's quite enough, Severus." He gave him a look that said 'thanks, but you should've stopped after a bit there'. He ran a hand down his face and looked at Sirius and Marlene for a moment. "I did my research, but apparently none of your professors thought to warn me about any of that. Despite me asking who to look out for, things I should know – such as the fact that Nymphadora Tonks would much rather be called Tonks than her first name. And yet they seemed to leave out the fact some of you have… incredibly messed up lives."
He took in an even breath and clenched his fists. "I'm not used to dealing with people in general. I'm more of a curse first, ask questions later sort of person. So yeah, Dark wizards, murderers, they're nothing compared to a pack of fifteen-year-olds with… issues." He walked up to the little group, patting Severus's back, though he flinched away, and McKay took that as a 'don't touch me' and did not attempt to pat the boy's back anymore. "Now, Severus, I'm sure Marlene has plenty of things she faces in her life. Perhaps not all pertaining to To – You-Know-Who, but it doesn't make you better than or anything like that because she has to deal with things that are slightly different than you. You have no idea what goes on in her life, so you shouldn't judge her. Just as she has no idea what goes on in my life, and she shouldn't judge me for that either."
"… Just as a clarification, I would never use an unforgivable on any of my students. And out in the field I avoid them whenever possible. You can fight without dark magic and still be on part with dark wizards. Dark Magic is just the easy way out. To fight without any dark magic is what truly takes skill." Ouch. Severus looked a bit mad at that statement, but McKay decided he would continue, not worrying about it – he'd heard that boy liked Dark Magic. One of the few unimportant things he had been told before this. You know, instead of 'these kids are really not well'.
"However, I must stress upon you all, out there in that world, the terrors you saw in here are nothing. That's just everyday out there. You see you family, friends, acquaintances, children die before your eyes. But you're fifteen. You shouldn't have to worry about all of that. You shouldn't have to worry about your parents beating you until you can't move. You shouldn't have to worry about losing your family or You-Know-Who. You should worry more about who's dating who, and how Sandra totally tripped down the stairs, like oh my god." Yes he raised his voice for that last bit. It sounded ridiculous.
"Of course, you can't quite control that I suppose. Just like I can't control the fact I'm scared. I'll go out and admit it, I'm scared of screwing up here as a professor. I'm scared that you'll all go out there unprepared and die. I'm trying my best. No one else would take the job. So yeah, I may have faced Death Eaters, murderers, thieves, werewolves, and other beasts, but this is by far the scariest thing I've ever faced."

"Sev..."
She wasn't able to argue, because as soon as she had a retort prepared, he'd turned and torn into Marlene.
Well, sort of. Analysing what he was saying, though he probably could have worded it better - Slytherin's do as Slytherin's does--he had several significant points. There are plenty of people living that fear. She shuddered, closing her eyes and turning away. Her greatest fear wasn't even a fear -- it was a very real possibility.
McKay began to speak again, and at the end of his speech, she flinched hard at the word werewolves but other than that, made no indication of being affected. "I wish it were that easy, Professor," she said softly. "To be normal. To live like any other fifteen year old."

Sirius wanted to lay into Snape for going after Marlene like that. He knew she didn't worry about such things like that. A color was a color right? Sirius was gonna let Marlene have her go at him here in class, but once they left all bets were off and Snivellus better watch his back. He was going to get the greasy git. One civil conversation meant nothing, especially after what he said. Sure he'd respect Rose's decision to be with him but if something happened he'd kill him.
"Wow, way to hang that threat out there Snape. Gonna have your master go after her and her family?" He asked with a bit of a scathing tone. That was all he had for now, but if he opened his mouth one more time about Marlene, Sirius wasn't gonna hesitate, even though there was a professor there. Who to him seemed a bit shady to him.
Well good for him. Teaching scared him. To be honest It would probably scare Sirius as well, plus he had no desire to teach kids. And facing all of those things he could respect that. Sirius decided that he would wait and see about the professor, but he was going to find out if he actually was an auror or not.
"Rose. With the world we live in, I think that we are as normal as we can be. But nothing in life is ever easy nor is it normal." Sirius said.

Marlene was still irritated, and Snape had to open his fat mouth. Such a Slytherin, speak up when it suits them to try and put others in their place. She rarely ever used makeup, and even when she did it wasn’t much. “For your information, I rarely ever use makeup you idiot.” She didn’t need to use the stuff, thanks to being part veela. After her talk with Sirius and Rose, Marlene had decided to give Snape a chance. But now that bridge was burnt and gone before it even got started. “I know they have more important things to worry about. Their job is quite dangerous after all.” Did he think that she didn’t know that?
“I lost my father when I was young. I live that fear ever day.” She was afraid that she would lose the rest of her family one day. And then what Sirius said about Voldemort being Snape’s master made her worry even more. “My place?!” She was livid now, as she had heard it many times before, and had her hand on her wand, ready to get it out and send the bastard to the hospital wing. She wouldn’t shed a tear if he got disfigured for life. Rose might care, but that didn’t matter to her now. “Why not just do it yourself since you clearly hate creatures like me. And then maybe Rose can spare herself some heartbreak when she finds out your using her!” Marlene had no idea if he was using Rose for nefarious purposes or not, but at the moment she didn’t care.
And then there was the professor patting Snape on the back and it almost seemed like he agreed with the arse. “Come on Snape use the unforgivable. I’m sure you know how to do it, learned it from Voldemort, or Sirius’ cousin Bellatrix.” Being pissed and baiting the idiot was an easy thing to do for her, even if he didn’t take the bait. But if he did then he would be kicked out of school. “Plus, I already know what it feels like to be under the cruciatus, and it isn’t any fun. That was almost a daily thing for Sirius growing up! Being abused isn’t something to make light of you good for nothing greasy haired bastard!” Marlene probably shouldn’t have shared that bit of information to the whole class, because only few knew, and she hoped he’d forgive her.
Still glaring at Snape, wishing he’d burst into flames, while she was holding her wand, Marlene had some how maintained control of her veela magic. It was a good thing she was sitting next to Sirius as she felt his hand under their desk, grasp hers in a show of silent support. She knew she had backup.

Severus didn't care that he knew that some of the stuff he said wasn't true. He said it to get under her skin. He looked at her with that lazy look in his eyes, one that really said he gave 0 flying leaps. "Well in that case, you probably should use more. I just assumed your ugly mug was due to a bad makeup job. I know of some girls who might give you a tutorial on how to not look completely and utterly destitute." Okay, yes she was pretty. He'd admit that internally. And it didn't help she was part Veela, which he could feel the pull from. However, he was quite good at compartmentalizing his feelings and doing things even if he knew they were wrong.
"I wish I lost my father when I was young." Severus wasn't even reaching for his wand, though he had half a mind to whip it out and do exactly what she told him to do. However, he controlled himself and gave her a shrug. "I would, but unfortunately, you're so far beneath me you aren't worth my time."
The lazy looked turned a bit intense as he looked her right in the eyes, unwavering resolve flowing from him. "Do you know how it feels to be completely and utterly powerless? To beg for mercy but be told its your fault this is happening and if only you were a better person, you'd actually have some value? To grovel to someone who is lesser than you – to someone who you are more powerful than, but you can't stop them because it's against the rules. To watch as someone you care about who has the power to fight back… succumb to the pain and torture because they don't value themselves? It's alright. It's fine. It's normal. That's what you're told by the one person you care about, and so you get used to it. It becomes second nature to you. It becomes everyday life and so yeah, it becomes something you don't think of as anything serious."
Severus frowned, standing up so he was towering over her, that way he felt like he had some sort of control over this, over her, a power move. "I will make light of whatever I feel like. If you have a problem with that, that's your own problem."

"The world might be bleak, but there's always a spark of light if you look for it and stop focusing on the darkness," McKay said looking towards Rose and Sirius for a moment.
However, the argument between Marlene and Severus was still going on. Great. McKay rubbed his forehead and looked down. Dear Merlin. These kids. What was he supposed to do? He'd fought against many a dark wizard, and yet he didn't know how to deal with these kids. He took in a deep breath and sighed.
"I said that's enough, both of you!" McKay placed a hand on Severus's shoulder and pushed him back down, so he was sitting down again. He'd do the same if Marlene stood up. He didn't want to shut them up as that wouldn't do any good, it'd just tell them that he was a hardnose and didn't allow discussion in his class – after all this was something related to the dark arts in a way – it was about the real world. He made a note to talk to McGonagall about this later. She knew about all of this a lot better than he did. He was just an author pretending to be an auror (sure he'd been pretending for several years now, but still) attempting to be a teacher to these students.
"I believe this an important conversation to have, but I won't have you two at each other's throats. So please, settle down and if you're still interested in discussing this topic, be civil about it, or else I will have to take additional action. Got it? You're both acting like children. Which I suppose I asked for with that whole 'act like kids' thing I said earlier, but even still. Severus you shouldn't assume she doesn't understand how hard things can be – experiences are different for everyone, and everyone's experiences are valid and just as important. Marlene, you can't assume that Severus doesn't have any idea what he's talking about either, just like he doesn't know everything about you, you don't know about him. If this discussion doesn't calm down, I'll be writing you both up for detentions."

And even if there had been a civil conversation, it was all out the window now. She groaned, turning away from the conversation. She was stuck because while, really, she would normally rise up to defend, she knew Severus wouldn't like that at all.
However, Marlene was a force to be reckoned with, and she had to resist going for her wand as her words became heated.
And there it was, that stuck feeling. Harsh words were being thrown about. Emotions were high. Honestly, that boggart had set them all on edge and really, it was unfair to be picking on each other like this.
"Guys..." she interjected. She wasn't heard.
"GUYS." She tries again, a little stronger.
Fucking hell. Luckily McKay came by to shove Severus back into his seat and she sighs, slipping her hand into Severus in hopes to calm him a little. She knew that Marlene had chosen some choice words to get a reaction out of him, and she knew that Severus wouldn't stand for it. Emotions were way too high after all that had happened. She hoever, did set a serious look on Marlene.
"I'm not being used."
And with that, she turned away from her.

Sirius just looked on with a bored expression on his face. Well that is until Snape just had to be an arse. Granted Marlene was doing just fine, but at least she didn’t do the whole attempt at an intimidation tactic by standing up. Sirius had sat up a little straighter, with his wand in hand, but he held it loosely, so that he could claim that it was to protect himself and others from harm should spells start flying. He had also grabbed a hold of Marlene’s hand to let her know that he had her back.
Oh, and then look at that McKay to the rescue of the one and only Snape, the Snake. Favorites already. At this point Sirius wasn’t going to call him professor, he hadn’t earned that much respect if any, in Sirius’ opinion. “Obviously everyone has different experiences.” He said sarcastically. “Of course, they are. We’re all children that were forced to grow up early in life.” Wow was this guy for real? Tells them one thing and then takes it back, while trying to diffuse the situation.
“This is normal. Since Snape has no clue how to shut his gob. But then yet again with all the grease in his hair, which I’m sure runs into his mouth, is what keeps it flapping in the wind when it isn’t wanted nor needed.” He had to get that out there since he wasn’t going to let Marlene get a detention with Snape without him being there.

Marlene had had enough at this point and wanted nothing more than to hex Snape, but with how Sirius was acting, all calm and collected, helped her see some sort of reason, and realize that it would just be easier to wait, because with Sirius’ help she could get the greasy toe rag at a later time. Snape’s attempt at a power move was kind of annoying. She was better than him in many regards, and in others not so much. But they were different and had different strengths just like everyone else.
“Just bugger off Snape. I’m done wasting my time with you.”
Marlene at this point sat back, and suppressed her anger when the professor had come over. “Of course, professor.” She turned in time to see Rose look away from her, and instantly Marlene knew she shouldn’t have said that Snape was probably using Rose. But she had said it in the heat of the moment. She quickly scribbled a note and discreetly handed it to Sirius, who slipped it into Rose’s bag, just letting her know that she was sorry, and wanted to talk after they had some time to calm down from this absurd class.
“Wow first class and already favoring the Slytherins.” She commented in a whisper to Sirius. At least it certainly seemed like it. The professor had come to Snape’s aid twice in one class. If that wasn’t favoritism then she didn’t know what was.

Severus was scowling, even while the professor was speaking. Oh good, take their side. That's what he saw it as, mostly because he saw the world against him. But also, because he felt like the guy was getting onto him for feeling like he had the right to comment on whatever the hell he wanted. Because he did have that right and if they didn’t like it, that was their own problem.
"Whatever." He rolled his eyes and looked forward again. He didn't quite enjoy being picked on like this. Yes, he felt like she was picking on him even though he started it. He saw her as having started it by insulting the professor – who he didn't think was a very good professor either, but still. He felt like they should've gotten a detention. Not him, Sirius and Marlene. Yet they were still safe.

McKay looked between Marlene and Severus and he felt while the flames weren't choked out, at least it was a bit calmer. He quickly made his way up to the front of the classroom and cleared his throat. "S-So, Boggarts…" He clenched both of his fists tightly.
From there, he began to explain the nature of Boggarts and why the spell worked on them: laughter defeated Boggarts. Boggarts rarely take form when it comes to a muggle, and no one knows what a boggart's 'natural' form looks like as it always takes the shape of some sort of fear of the person near it. He talked about the studies of Boggarts and how even those with the best Occlumency skills could be taken down by a Boggart, implying that whatever they used to judge their greatest fear wasn't Legilimency and had to be something else – something stronger. He even talked about how some wizards tried taking pictures of a Boggart when no one was in the room, only to find the picture would change to whatever the fear was of whoever was looking at the portrait.
"When there's more than one person… the Boggart tends to pick the fear that… affects one of them more than the other. If someone's fear is deeper and more terrifying than the other, it picks the worst one…" McKay finished off, clearing his throat. "Well, that's… all for today. If you want to stick around, I can do a demonstration myself with the Boggart – point out the features I talked about but otherwise… you're free to go."

He was trying, he really, really was.
When class was dismissed, she gathered up her items and left, knowing Severus would more than likely follow after. At least once she threw a look at Marlene for the assuming words she had thrown at her in their spat earlier.
These are the days she really hated people.

Sirius snorted. Was this guy for real? He wasn’t happy with the way that class had been taught. It was more disappointing than anything. “You should have gone with the demonstration first professor.” Sirius said seriously. Sure, facing the unknown was what life was all about but at the same time, but the demonstration should have been done first. Or at least a pensive memory shown of one, before they faced one. For those that have never seen nor heard of the creature before.
“Marlene, Rose, I’ll talk to you later.” Sirius said before snatching his bag off the floor where he had placed it earlier, and left the classroom. He needed some time to think. And he had the perfect place for that.
