September 30
The day had started out just like any other day would. Albeit, it was a cloudy and overcast day, that made it look like it was going to rain. Her morning classes, Charms and Ancient Runes went quite well, as they usually did for her. Especially since they had only covered theory today in charms and she had learned some knew runes. So, all of the normal things for those classes. She had been a little disappointed as she still hadn’t received a letter from home or really anyone for that matter.
But just as lunch was ending for most and she had a free period as did several of her friends. She smiled and waved back at her little sister who had walked by with her friends on their way to class. Marlene still hadn’t told her sister that she hadn’t received any letters either. Only that their mum, and older brother were probably really busy with work and what not. But she had had a feeling since yesterday that things were going to change for her today. She looked around at all of her friends who were conversing with one another at their table in the Great Hall, and she could help but smile as she watched them all laughing, at some story the boys were telling. It was so confusing sometimes as they would get along for the most, aside from James constantly pestering Lily to go out with him. Which she knew wouldn’t happen any time soon. The boy needed to grow up. Much like Sirius had done over the summer and the first month of school. She only knew that Sirius had grown up over the summer because they had been exchanging letters since the end of term. He had even sent her one while they were on the train back home.
As she listened to the story most of the hall was empty aside from a couple of professors that didn’t have a class to teach right now. She laughed along with them as Sirius said something about James turning into a half defeathered chicken while they had been messing with some potion that they had mixed up for a prank on someone in their fourth year. She laughed only because it had back fired and had gotten James.
Marlene got distracted when she heard a screech as an owl descended from the ceiling. It was rather odd seeing an owl this time of day. Normally it was in the morning when the post arrived. Not now. She got worried as she watched the owl come towards her, and eventually it landed in front of her holding out an envelope to her. She took the envelope after noticing that it was directly addressed to her but it wasn’t from home. No, it was from the ministry if the wax seal on the back was anything to go by. With trepidation she broke the seal and slowly opened the letter.
Marlene sat there stunned, she had no clue what to do. Her mum and brother were both dead. One of her worst fears had come true. Maybe that Boggart lesson had been a warning. But she was thankful that she still had her little sister.
She felt the tears start to fall down her face. She hid them to start with but with people all around her they were bound to notice, and all she wanted right now was to be alone. She hastily stood up and grabbed her bag from the floor she had set it earlier by her feet when they had started lunch. Once she had that she ran from the hall, and didn’t look back as she heard her friends calling after her. And she ran until she found a spot near the lake, and subsequently as she looked around noticed that it was by her favorite tree to sit under. And she promptly flopped down beneath the tree, and pulled her knees to her chest as she began to cry even more, silently mind you since she was never one to cry loudly, as she thought about her now deceased family members.
After sometime she heard a noise, and if she was honest, she didn’t care one bit who or what it was. She was too grief stricken at the moment to care. If it was someone unfriendly, she would curse them so badly they’d end up in the hospital wing for a long time. She was sad and angry. She had no idea who did this and the Ministry hadn’t said anything about who had killed her family. And it had taken them several weeks before they had informed her that her family was dead. She had asked a couple of professors to check on them but nothing had come of it and now she was finding out the truth. But now she had no idea what to tell her sister, or even how to tell her. She was breaking on the inside and it hurt so much. She felt fresh tears begin to fall once more as she looked out at the calming waves of the lake.
